ALEXANDRIA BAY — A man who climbed out the window of a Clayton police patrol car to escape from custody last Thursday surrendered the next day to his probation officer and is now jailed in Watertown.

Bradley D. Roberts, 29, of 39 Cornwall St., is charged with third-degree escape and petit larceny. Alexandria Town Justice Sherry L. Pennington set bail at $5,000, sending him to the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building.

Alexandria Bay police could not be reached Tuesday for comment, but Clayton Police Chief Kevin J. Patenaude said the public was never endangered by Thursday’s incident. Mr. Roberts is not considered to be a dangerous person, he said.

Clayton police were here detaining Mr. Roberts while village police were taking a statement from a person about a cellphone theft, Chief Patenaude said. Mr. Roberts, handcuffed and alone in the car, managed to bring his hands around to his front and rolled down a window, the Clayton chief said. Mr. Roberts then climbed out the window and ran.

Several police agencies were alerted to the escape, but Mr. Roberts avoided apprehension, deciding the next day to surrender.
