PITTSBURGH Katrina Hawkins notched a hat trick as the Chatham womens hockey team earned its first conference win of the year with a 4-2 ECAC West Conference victory over SUNY Potsdam on Sunday.
The flu also played a hand for the Cougars (2-16-0, 1-13-0) as six Bears players, including both goalies were out of the lineup. Defenseman Heather Silcott was forced to make an emergency start in net for SUNY Potsdam (8-12-2, 4-8-1). She had nine saves.
Megan Buchanan made 33 saves for Chatham, while Jenn Crawford had both goals for SUNY Potsdam.
■ St. Lawrence University sophomore Nordic skier Austin Meng had a career-best 10th-place finish in the mens 10K classic at the University of Vermont Winter Carnival in Burlington, Vt.
Meng is in the mix to earn a spot in 2013 NCAA championships. In the womens 10K classic, senior Kelsey Nichols matched her career-best finish in 21st place.
