POTSDAM Mrs. Carolyn Joan Deon, 76, of 38 Country Lane, formerly of Hewittville, peacefully passed away Friday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Carolyn LeBire in Massena, where she was under the loving care of her family and Hospice.
Joan was born January 28, 1937 in Albany, the daughter of the late Nelson and Henrietta Etta Jock LaBarge. She graduated from Potsdam High School in 1955. On November 5, 1955, she married her childhood sweetheart, Gerald F. Joe Deon at St. Andrews Catholic Church, Norwood with Msgr. Francis Maguire, celebrating. Joe predeceased her on August 16, 1986.
Joan was a bank teller for many years first with North Star Bank in Syracuse before going to Key Bank in Potsdam and Massena. She was a communicant of St. Andrews Catholic Church, Norwood and former communicant of St. Marys Catholic Church in Potsdam, where she was lecturer and former parish council member. Joan enjoyed baking, cooking for her grandchildren, having Friday and/or Saturday pizza parties with her family, and was an avid Earnhardt Racing fan. She also was an avid reader and loved feeding the wildlife on the front porch of her home. Joan also cherished the many friendships she forged throughout her life and the time she spent with each of her friends.
Joan is survived by her seven children, Gerald Deon of Potsdam; Carolyn and Steve LeBire of Massena; Michael and Marilyn Deon of Potsdam; Steve and Judy Deon of Potsdam; Lori and Kim Sprague of Potsdam; Mary and Dan Boyer of Norwood; and Shawn and Karen Deon of Canajoharie; 21 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; and her sister, Martha Frederick of Potsdam.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Jennifer Scheening on January 25, 2009.
Friends may call at the Garner Funeral Home, Potsdam, Wednesday 6-9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday 10:00 AM at St. Marys Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Robert H. Aucoin, celebrating. Burial will be in the spring at St. Marys Cemetery, Potsdam.
