MORRISTOWN – The villages new boat launch is under construction and on schedule for a mid-March completion.
Totaling $104,000, construction on the new launch is being done by Acts 2 Construction, Gouverneur.
Cold weather put it a little behind, Mayor Cheryl A. Shatraw said, but she still expects the project to be completed well before the April 1 deadline.
Construction on the launch is taking place in the winter to take advantage of low water levels and to avoid interfering with boat traffic.
The new launch will extend into the water 50 feet and will have a floating dock in the center, effectively creating two launches.
The floating dock will also provide easier access to boats being launched and taken out of the water. The launch is located off Water Street and faces Morristown Bay.
Construction crews have built a dirt ramp which they are using to prop up concrete slabs that will eventually be pushed into the water.
Two large, insulating tarps are covering the newly poured concrete.
Sid Harmer of Act 2 Construction said the next step is cutting out the ice and sliding the new concrete slabs into place.
Mr. Harmer said the new launch will extend several feet farther into the water than the previous one did, allowing easier access to the St. Lawrence River even when the water is low.
