The restoration of the outdoor skating rink at Thompson Park is a great idea.

An older generation remembers how skating on the rinks scattered around the city, even with a chill in the air nipping at the hands and face or a light snow falling, made for some wintertime fun in the city.

It is another entertaining pastime to draw us outdoors to enjoy another facet of north country life.

It’s nice that the City Parks and Recreation Department has restored one rink for young skaters and the over 30s generation to enjoy once again.

The rink will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends with the pool bathhouse open to warm skaters of all ages.

As department superintendent, Erin E. Gardner is bringing a refreshing attitude to the city, and not just with the outdoor skating but also helping to resolve the dispute over the operation of the concession stand at the Fairgrounds Arena during Thousand Islands Privateers hockey games.
