Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III, former commander of Fort Drum, was nominated Friday by President Barack Obama to command the U.S. Central Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla. Gen. Austin will replace Marine Gen. James N. Mattis in the role.

Gen. Austin, who has served as vice chief of staff of the Army since January 2012, led Fort Drum from 2003 to 2005.
