OGDENSBURG The City Council passed two resolutions last Monday supporting home-rule legislation to enable St. Lawrence County legislators to raise the sales tax.
Council members voted 6-1 to support St. Lawrence County resolutions urging representatives to enter bills in the state Assembly and Senate to give the county the authority to increase the sales tax from 3 to 4 percent.
The council also threw its support behind a county resolution urging state legislators to support the bills.
Officials passed the measures after a face-to-face meeting with county legislators earlier this month. At the meeting, legislators promoted a five-year plan to use the increased sales tax revenue to lower property taxes and replenish the county fund balance.
Council members approved the resolutions with the caveat that county legislators follow through with that plan.
