Belleville- Esther H. Hodge, 95, Belleville, devoted mother and grandmother, passed away Thursday evening at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home where she was a resident for nine years.
She was born in Redwood, January 9, 1918, a daughter of The Rev. Miles L. Hutchinson and Nina Steinhilber Hutchinson. She started her education in Sackets Harbor, moving to Philadelphia with her family, then on to Belleville where she graduated from Union Academy in 1936 as Valedictorian of her class. Esther graduated from Cornell University in 1940. Following her education, Esther was employed at the Agricultural Insurance Agency in Watertown for several years.
Esther married Kenneth G. Hodge September 16, 1944. The couple lived on Rt 178 outside the hamlet of Belleville where she taught piano lessons for many years. Mr. Hodge passed September 15, 1982.
Mrs. Hodge was a longtime member of the Belleville United Methodist Church and was active with the Methodist Womens Group on the local, district and conference levels. She was a member of the Womens Christian Temperance Union and the Loyal Temperance Legion. Esther was a member of the Jefferson Co. Childrens Home Auxillary. She enjoyed traveling especially to the Scandinavian Countries and to the Holy Land. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a voracious reader.
Mrs. Hodge penned a book about her life for her children. One of her experiences was as a young girl she attended a gathering outside the Village of Theresa where Amelia Earhart landed her plane in a nearby field and spoke to the group that had gathered. The epilogue to her book read, Life has been very good to me, so make the most of each day, look forward each morning to life, and thank God for His love for you.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Ann, Belleville. Two daughters and their husbands, Nancy and James Mack, Belleville; Marilee and Skip Taylor, Oswego. Her grandchildren, Shawn and Jacob Taylor, Jeric and Ashley Hodge, Erik and Kyle Mack. She is also survived by the first exchange student at Belleville who lived with the Hodges for a year, Anna-Gretha Johansson, Umea, Sweden.
The funeral will be 1 pm Monday, January 21st at the Belleville United Methodist Church. Calling hours are at the church from 11 am – 1 pm prior to the funeral. Spring burial will be in Woodside Cemetery, Belleville.
