CARTHAGE – Joseph Hongo, 95, formerly of 330 South Clinton St., died Wednesday afternoon, January 16, 2013 at the Country Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, where he had been a patient for several years.

Born in Vintondale, Pennsylvania on August 29, 1917. He attended local schools. In 1925 his family relocated to Lowville, NY. He worked as a farmer, also as a machine operator for the New York Air Brake and also was employed by Rouse Construction. He owned and operated Hongo’s Bar & Grill in Carthage for many years. He married Eunice M. Tripp-Tyner on September 1st, 1955 at the United Christian Church in West Carthage. Mrs. Hongo died on October 30, 2008.

He was a memberof the Local 761 Machinist Aerospace Workers, a former Lions Club member, Past President of the Copenhagen Senior Citizens, active in bowling and has held all of the offices at the United Community Church in Carthage.

Joe is survived by his sons; Ronald Hongo, Brewerton and Richard Hongo, Watertown, his daughters; Carolyn Dekin, Shelby, Ohio and Judy Nye, Carthage, a stepson, Richard Tyner, Carthage, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his last remaining sibling, Emma Ewing.

Besides his wife, Eunice, he is predeceased by his siblings, John, Steven and Julia Hongo and Helen Balash.

A funeral service will be held in the Chapel of the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage on Monday, January 21st at 3:00 PM with the Rev. Bruce W. Chapman officiating. Interment will be in the spring in Hillside Cemetery, Champion. Visitation will be held on Monday, prior to the funeral, from 1:00 – 3:00 PM.
