POTSDAM - The Potsdam Community Band will perform a program of band favorites at 3 p.m. Sunday in Hosmer Hall at the Crane School of Music. Admission is free: a gift to the community.

Familiar tunes from West Side Story, by Leonard Bernstein and arranged by Jay Bocook, will be featured along with band classics such as the 2nd Suite by Gustav Holst and the rollicking Cajun Folk Songs by Ticheli. Beautiful tunes will be heard in Rick Kirby’s arrangement of the spiritual, He’s Gone Away, and in the deeply-moving On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss by Holsinger.

No band concert seems complete without a march, and in this concertPCB will play Grundman’s March: Winds as well as Harpham’s The Silver Quill. Music of the great American composer Aaron Copland will be heard in an arrangement that contains excepts from Fanfare for the Common Man and the “Tis a Gift to Be Simple” melody from Appalachian Spring. Music from Rodeo rounds out the arrangement, with excerpts from both “Buckaroo Holiday” and “Hoe-Down.” The two other pieces on the program are Shaffer’s Pageant of Light and a musical adaptation of a romantic Japanese legend in The Seventh Night of July by Itaru Sakai.

The group is directed by Theresa Witmer, and musicians range from 17 to 70.
