The closure of the H.T. Wiley Intermediate School pool has disrupted physical education classes and left the Downtown YMCA scrambling to rearrange schedules.

Watertown City School District Superintendent Terry N. Fralick said the pool has been closed for a few weeks because of a broken pump. He did not have a timeline for how long it may take to fix.

“Our maintenance guys are working on it,” he said.

However, Watertown Family Y Executive Director Peter W. Schmitt found out only Monday that the pool was closed, and he had scheduled swim lessons to begin Tuesday.

A notice about a change of location, posted on Monday, is on the Y’s website, www.watertownymca.org/ymca.

“We have two pools here, but the pools we have are already full with programs,” he said.

The Tuesday and Thursday swimming lessons, scheduled for 4 to 5 p.m., were moved to the Downtown Y pool. However, because of the shift, Tuesday’s open swim, previously scheduled for 4 to 5:30 p.m., and Thursday’s Aqua Zumba, previously scheduled for 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., were postponed until after Feb. 14.

“We apologize for the extreme inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience,” the online notice says.

The Y has used the school’s pool because there is more parking space and the pool is bigger, making it more accommodating for lessons.

Swim-based physical education classes also have been postponed until further notice.

“For our fifth- and sixth-grade P.E., they’re just using alternate activities,” Mr. Fralick said. “They’re not going down to the high school pool.”

He said the cost to fix the pool was undetermined.

The last pool renovation was in 2008 as a part of a $16.3 million capital construction project.
