COLTON - Plans for the town of Colton’s annual Winterfest Weekend are almost complete.

A detailed schedule is posted on the town’s website (http://townofcolton.com) at the bottom of the Events Schedule under Events/News. Very soon posters also will be displayed around town and in nearby communities. And throughout the weekend a map showing locations of venue sites for the wide range of activities, both outside and indoors, will be available at major locations in town along with the schedule.

The festival kicks off at Colton-Pierrepont Central School on State Highway 56 in Colton where students have been working on an Art Around Town project which art teacher Krystal Stowe hopes will be the first of many annual contributions to the town’s Winterfest Weekend.

Nationally recognized duo Peggy Lynn and Dan Duggan will perform original and traditional music at 7 p.m. Jan. 25 in the auditorium. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children not performing with the duo. During the day on Friday, supported by the Colton-Pierrepont Teachers’ Association and the Colton Winterfest Planning Committee, Peggy and Dan will work with students in kindergarten through grade 6. Their visit will conclude with the evening concert when all the children will be invited to perform with them on stage.

Health and craft fairs will be held at the school on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. Services being provided during the health fair include Operation Safe Child ID by the Sheriff’s Department and testing of blood sugar, body fat, cholesterol and blood pressure by St. Lawrence County Health Initiative.

Vendors for the craft fair should contact Grace Hawley by calling (315) 262-2439. The cost is $15 per space if tables are provided; otherwise it is $10 per space for vendors bringing their own. Commemorative shirts (all sizes) can be ordered in advance and purchased during the Craft Fair from Suzanne Fiacco and Karen Peck (playmakerproducts11@gmail.com).

A highlight of Winterfest every year is the extensive Quilt Show where hundreds of pieced and quilted items are displayed in four places—Colton Hepburn Library, Colton Town Hall, Zion Episcopal Church (all on Main Street in the hamlet of Colton) and Catamount Lodge (on State Highway 56 towards Sevey’s Corner). Jill Josephs will be featured at Catamount Lodge. Quilters wishing to display items at the other three venues should call Lorraine Gowing at (315) 379-9392.

Outdoor enthusiasts also should get ready for various races in town. Anyone wishing to run in the Colton 10 Mile Foot Race on Saturday should call Dan or Renee Dominie at (315) 379-9290. For the ever-popular Bed Races on Saturday, please contact Butch Arquiett at (315) 262-2507. And cross-country skiiers should phone Judy and Ed Fuhr at (315) 262-2362 about the Higley Hustle Cross-Country Ski Races on Sunday. at Higley Flow State Park

Several businesses in town are pitching in to help make Winterfest a success. Judy Brassard hopes people will stop in her shop, Three Falls Antiques in the hamlet of South Colton next to Boyce’s General Store, while traveling north and south along State Highway 56 for various activities. Judy will be holding a Silent Auction from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan.26 & 27 to benefit the local Neighborhood Center serving Colton, Pierrepont and Parishville. Artists, crafters, collectors or others wishing to contribute items for the Silent Auction should contact Judy by calling (315) 265-2566 or e-mailing her (mbrassa1@twcny.rr.com).

The complete schedule should be reviewed for more details about food and art events as well as other recreational activities throughout Winterfest. Internet users also can get updates via the town of Colton page on Facebook. The town welcomes people sharing updates with others who live in, visit or are otherwise interested in the town of Colton and wintertime fun. Ruth McWilliams, the town’s Tourism & Beautification coordinator, also can be contacted about the schedule by calling (315) 262-2450.
