City Council members have agreed to apply for a $17,190 Fire Prevention and Safety grant through the Federal Emergency Management Agency to obtain a portable hazard house for the city Fire Department.

The money will be used to enhance the Fire Department’s fire safety education program and teach the elderly how to escape a fire.

About the size of conference table, the portable hazard house will be used during the winter when the department’s fire safety trailer is not used. The trailer is used for fire education programs for school-age children.

Partitioned into six small rooms, the modular equipment uses heating ducts to show how fires travel throughout residences, fire officials said.

The city’s share to pay for the equipment would be $1,719.
