Alexandria Bay, NY- Richard J. Dick Durand, 84, of 15 Cornwall St., Alexandria Bay, died January 5th at Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown.
Dick was born December 30, 1928 in Watertown, NY, the son of Roland C. and Anita Babcock Durand. He graduated from Watertown High School and then served in the United States Army from 1952-1956.
Dick married Joan VanArnam on October 12, 1952 at St. James Roman Catholic Church in Carthage. He worked for 42 years as an installer for NY Telephone, retiring in 1989.
He was a member and past president of the Alexandria Bay Rotary Club, a brother in the —— Masonic Lodge, a member of the pioneers for NY Telephone retirees, the first president of the Alex Bay Minor Hockey League, past chairman of the Alexandria Bay Planning Board, and volunteered over 40 years in the Alexandria Bay Fire Dept.
Dick is survived by his wife, Joan, six sons and their wives: John and Lori, Alexandria Bay; James and Cindy, Alexandria Bay; Jeff and Stacey, Alexandria Bay; Joe and Rosalie, Marcellus, NY; Jerry and Patty, Alexandria Bay; Jay and Andrea, Syracuse; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Eileen Durand, Chambersburg, PA. A brother, David predeceased him.
A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at 11:00 am at St. Cyrils Catholic Church. A reception will be held at the Alexandria Bay Fire Hall immediately following the service.
