Clayton- Mrs. Elsie M. Garnsey, age 78, of Bartlet Point Road, died Sunday in the Town of Hammond where she was under the care of her family and Hospice of St. Lawrence County. The funeral will be at 11am Thursday at the T.R. Jetty Funeral Home in Clayton. Calling hours are Wednesday from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.
Elsie was born August 20, 1934, in Cape Vincent, the daughter of Raymond and Ruth Bourcy Votra. She graduated from Cape Vincent High School.
On September 7, 1952, she married David Garnsey at the Clayton Methodist Church. The marriage ended in divorce. Mr. Garnsey died August 20, 2008.
Elsie worked for a time as a waitress at Sleepy Hollow restaurant in Cape Vincent and was a secretary for a number of years at Cedar Point State Park. She also was the co-operator with her longtime companion, Don Gray, at the Victorian Convenience Store in Clayton until it was sold.
She was a life member of the Cape Vincent American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Elsie enjoyed sewing, baking, doing photo albums and scrapbooks, gardening, collecting memorabilia and especially enjoyed her lunches at the Payntor Senior Citizens Center.
Surviving are two sons and their wives, David and Lynn of Clayton and Ray and Melissa of Hammond; three grandchildren, Kourtney Girard, Zachary and Christopher Garnsey; one great grandson, Ryan Garnsey; two brothers, Donald and Marvin, both of Cape Vincent; two sisters, Doris Brown of Watertown and Marilyn (Dennis) Espinosa of Kansas; nieces and nephews.
One sister, Rosie Votra died before her.
