REDWOOD — Flames that erupted late Monday in a 2002 Chevy Avalanche destroyed that vehicle, two other cars and a shed on the property of Steven J. and Amanda Denner, 43784 County Route 2.

Two pigs in the shed died, and a third was believed seriously injured.

Firefighters from eight departments responded to an 11:12 p.m. alarm and were able to save a hay storage barn that was attached to the shed.

While there is insurance protection for the property, the Denners were uncertain whether the three vehicles, all 2002 models, are insured against fire, county fire investigator Roger E. Brunet said.

The cause of the fire in the Avalanche was undetermined and under investigation, he said. The couple’s daughter, Ashley N., 17, parked the Avalanche at 9:15 p.m. between the other two autos, Mr. Brunet said. She was unaware of any problems with the vehicle, he said.

After all family members had gone to bed, they were awakened by an explosion, and then a horn on one of the cars began sounding. Flames spread to both vehicles and then to the shed, where two tractors were stored. Family members tried to start and move one car and one tractor, but were turned away by intense heat, Mr. Brunet said.

A four-wheel all-terrain vehicle and tools also were lost with the shed, he said.

The shed already was partially collapsed by the time firefighters arrived, he said.

Redwood firefighters were assisted at the scene by members of the Clayton, Alexandria Bay, Fishers Landing, LaFargeville, Plessis, Theresa and Hammond fire companies.
