Vanessa C. LaFlair got a very special New Years Day surprise.
She gave birth to Layla Marie Besaw at 3:53 p.m. at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center.
Her due date was the day after Christmas, said Ms. LaFlair, who added she was glad to have given birth on Jan. 1.
Layla was one of the few babies in the region born on the day, and the first baby to be born at Claxton-Hepburn on New Years Day in the last five years. Weighing 7 pounds, 3 ounces and measuring 20 inches long, Layla already has a full head of hair.
She treats me really well, said Ms. LaFlair, adding that her familys new addition so far rarely cries and has been sleeping well.
In light of the New Years Day birth, the hospital gave Ms. LaFlair and her baby two large gift baskets.
Complete with baby clothes, pajamas and toys, the baskets also contained lip gloss, a candle and skin care products for mom.
The baskets were presented to Ms. LaFlair by Nurse Manager Lenette M. Deloney.
Ms. LaFlairs boyfriend and Laylas father, Doug L. Besaw, said this is the second woman in his life who has a holiday birthday. His first daughter, Breanna Gladle Besaw, 9, was born on Christmas.
Ms. LaFlair said she was treated very well at the hospital but was looking forward to being released Friday afternoon.
I love being in the comfort of my own home, she said.
