POTSDAM A Winthrop man died from blunt force trauma to the chest following a two-vehicle accident Monday, according to an autopsy conducted Tuesday.
Lawrence E. Wagstaff Jr., 66, of 967 County Route 49, was killed Monday afternoon when an SUV crossed the center line of Route 11 and crashed head-on into his van, state police at Canton said.
St. Lawrence County Coroner June H. Wood responded to the accident scene. Mr. Wagstaff was declared was dead at the scene of the 1:13 p.m. crash.
The other driver, Anna Manning, 63, of Parishville, was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital suffering from abdominal pains, troopers said. Ms. Mannings injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
State police said Ms. Manning apparently became distracted and lost control of the 2008 Chevrolet blazer she was driving. The SUV then crossed into the opposite lane of Route 11 near Regan Road, colliding with the 1994 Ford Econoline van driven by Mr. Wagstaff.
Alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the crash, troopers said.
An autopsy was conducted on New Years Day at Canton-Potsdam Hospital. Ms. Wood said Mr. Wagstaff died of blunt force trauma to the chest. The death was ruled an accident.
There is no evidence that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, according to Ms. Wood, although it will take about 8 weeks for toxicology reports to verify this.
Ms. Manning was ticketed with failure to keep right, troopers said. She is scheduled to answer the charge Jan. 10 in Potsdam Town Court.
