A teenager shoplifted nearly $1,000 in merchandise late Monday at Walmart Supercenter, outer Arsenal Street, then dragged a 1-year-old child on the ground while running from store personnel, the Jefferson County Sheriffs Department alleged.
Makenzie N. Roberts, 17, of 153 Haney St., was arrested at 11:45 p.m. at the store on charges of petit larceny and endangering the welfare of a child. She was released to await arraignment in Watertown Town Court.
Deputies said Miss Roberts is accused of attempting to leave the store without paying for 160 items priced at a total of $995.07.
While trying to get away from store employees, (she) dragged the child on the wet ground, deputies alleged. The child was in her care, according to the sheriffs office.
Miss Roberts was arrested in September on charges of third-degree assault, endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated harassment. The case apparently is still pending in town of Lorraine Court, according to the Jefferson County district attorneys office.
She also has had criminal cases in the city and town of Watertown courts, and in both courts was granted youthful-offender status. One case is open record, however. She was fined $50 Friday in City Court for underage possession of an alcoholic beverage.
About four hours earlier, a state trooper went to the same store to arrest two other suspected shoplifters.
Christopher M. Bates, 24, and Jasmine R. Widrick, 21, both of 28729 N. Martin Road, Evans Mills, are charged with petit larceny in the alleged theft of merchandise priced at $157.91, police said. They also are summoned to town of Watertown Court.
Mr. Bates had another shoplifting case in that court earlier this year, when he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, was given a conditional discharge and was assessed $125 in court fees.
The disposition stemmed from an accusation in November 2011 that he stole items priced at $109 at Kmart, outer Arsenal Street.
