POTSDAM — Police are searching for the author of a bomb threat that shut down Potsdam High School for about two hours Tuesday morning while officers with dogs scoured the building for explosives.

None were found, officials said.

“These hoaxes are very disruptive,” Potsdam Central School Superintendent Patrick A. Brady said, noting that it had been about four years since Potsdam had seen such a threat.

Police were called immediately after the 7:25 a.m. incident, Mr. Brady added.

Potsdam Police Chief Kevin A. Bates said the threat was in the form of a note left on an outside door, but declined to elaborate on its contents while the matter remains under investigation.

Two state police bomb-sniffing dogs were brought in to aid officers searching the building, Chief Bates said. The gymnasium and surrounding area were immediately searched and declared clear for students and staff to be held there during the emergency, the chief added.

The building was fully cleared at 9:40 a.m., and students returned to classes, Mr. Brady said.
