POTSDAM — An independent fundraising effort by Clarkson University researchers seeking a diagnostic tool for autism has exceeded its goal.

The Internet “crowdfunding” campaign by Alisa G. Woods and Costel C. Darie, both Clarkson University chemistry and biomolecular science professors, yielded $6,225 — 114 percent of their $5,500 goal.

The researchers, looking for protein markers that cause autism, raised money for software to analyze laboratory results.

When protein markers are identified, a test to diagnose autism during infancy could be developed.

Ms. Woods and Mr. Darie attracted donors from throughout the United States and Canada and as far away as France, Australia, Switzerland, England and Italy.
