MASSENA — The Salvation Army of Massena said its Angel Tree has been going “very well” this year, but it is looking for one item in particular at this point: clothing.

“A lot of angel tags were taken off the trees. We’ve had many toy donations. We are doing well with toys. We are looking for clothing,” Lt. Cynthia L. Crowsen said.

The Angel Tree gives customers an opportunity take a tag from the tree and purchase the gift requested for a child.

The Salvation Army began the holiday season looking to provide for about 100 children. It accepted applications until Dec. 7.

Each ornament on the Angel Trees, which were placed in the St. Lawrence Centre mall, Key Bank and First Niagara Bank, contained the first name of a child in need from the Massena area, as well as his or her clothing size and a couple of gift suggestions.

Lt. Crowsen said the toy efforts were boosted by a recent radiothon and toy drive.

“The community was very generous when it came to toys,” she said.

Clothes are the priority now, she said.

She said she would “gladly accept it” if anyone has a winter coat, shoes or other clothing or outfits to provide the Salvation Army so it can, in turn, provide a better Christmas for someone else.

“If they would like to call our office or stop by the mall Christmas Castle, we can give them the sizes of the children that do not have clothing items that have come in yet, so they can be purchased,” Lt. Crowsen said.
