Many north country people will soon have comfortable sleep-filled nights, thanks to Tempur-Pedic’s donation of 71 mattress and box spring sets.

The delivery of some sets will occur Thursday at the Watertown Urban Mission, 247 Factory St., which will receive 40 itself for its critical-needs program; 21 are for the Victims Assistance Center’s new shelter under construction; and 10 will go to Army Community Services, Fort Drum, for a total value of about $162,000.

“If I see a need, I think it over and just go for it,” said Sheila F. Barney-Pullus, owner of Station WBVS, a fundraising store.

She said she worked with Tempur-Pedic territory manager Joseph Ginsburgh to get the donation, after sharing the north country’s urgent need for beds for people who have experienced unfortunate circumstances.

As part of the effort — but separate from the $162,000 — 50 beds were delivered to Catholic Charities in Syracuse, Mrs. Barney-Pullus said.

Victims Assistance Center Executive Director Elaina F. Marra said the center’s allotment will save the agency money it otherwise would have had to spend on beds.

“The beds get constantly used,” she said. “Some beds get overused and become soft and not very comfortable. This is a tremendous gift to mothers and children.”

Urban Mission development director Andrew G. Mangione said the Urban Mission appreciates the donation.

“We’re extremely grateful for Tempur-Pedic for their generosity and using their product to meet the needs of our community,” Mr. Mangione said.

When someone comes to the agency for support through the critical-needs program, they may need a new bed if a fire destroyed their home, or families who were once homeless find housing but need furniture.
