HOPKINTON - The vacancy created on the town board by the death of then Town Supervisor Marvin E. Rust last month was filled Monday night when the board voted unanimously to appoint Susan Lyon to fill the position left vacant.

Ms. Lyon will serve on the board through the end of the year, at which point she’ll have to decide whether run for the remaining three years of the term vacated by Susan Wood, who resigned from her council seat to become town supervisor.

“Her dad was town supervisor years ago, so she’s somewhat familiar with what’s going on,” Ms. Wood said. “She’s involved in a lot that goes on in the town and is the co-chair of Summer Fest She’s always around whenever anyone needs her. She’ll be a great addition.”

At the same meeting the board filled a vacancy, they also learned of another, following the resignation of Gordon O. Jock, effective Dec. 31.

Town Clerk Vickie L. French said a replacement for Mr. Jock will be appointed at the board’s January meeting.

She said Ms. Lyon was chosen for the seat from a field of four candidates who submitted letters of interest. Mr. Jock’s replacement will come from those three, as well as anyone else who submits a letter prior to the board’s meeting on Jan. 14.

While Ms. Wood said she’s sorry to see Mr. Jock leave the board, his resignation doesn’t come as a surprise.

“We always knew Gordie was kind of just filling in,” she said.

Mr. Jock was appointed to the board in 2010 after Mr. Rust resigned his board seat to become supervisor.

“He’s retired from UPS, and he wants to do some traveling,” Ms. Wood said. “He thought it wouldn’t be fair if he wanted to go somewhere for a couple of months to leave us without someone.”

Mr. Jock’s replacement on the board would also serve through the end of year and have to run for the remaining one-year of that term this fall.

Ms. Wood, who was unanimously named supervisor last month, will also have to run for town supervisor should she want to finish the remaining three years of Mr. Rust’s term.

Attempts to reach Ms. Lyon and Mr. Jock Tuesday afternoon were unsuccessful.
