MASSENA - A Massena man arrested by three different police agencies in a 24-hour period Tuesday has been sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility following his arrest on a felony criminal contempt count Tuesday evening.
Village police charged Derek J. Hammill, 20, of 50 West wood Drive, Massena, with a felony count of first-degree criminal contempt after he violated a temporary order of protection directing him to stay away from his estranged wife by sending Casey L. Hammill, 17, 95 text messages and calling her cell phone approximately 25 times Tuesday.
Hammill was arraigned Tuesday night by Massena Town Justice Gerald P. Sharlow and sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.
He acknowledged he had violated the order of protection moments after he was released following his arraignment on a fourth-degree stalking charge early Tuesday morning in Potsdam Village Court.
He said Potsdam Police officers gave him a ride from court back to his vehicle parked on Main Street in the village. As soon as I got into my car, I texted Casey about her statement to the Potsdam Police Department that led to me getting arrested, Hammill noted.
He said he also called his estranged wife, but she did not answer his texts or return the phone calls he made shortly after 4:20 a.m. Tuesday. He said he drove to his fathers home in Massena and sent several more texts until he went to bed shortly before 6 a.m.
Hammill, in his statement, told police he woke up shortly before 10:30 a.m. and once again began trying to call and text his estranged wife before going for a drive.
He said he was stopped by a Norfolk Town Police officer at 12:44 p.m. and ticketed for numerous traffic violations and misdemeanor charges including third-degree fleeing an officer in a police vehicle, trespassing and reckless driving.
While in custody, I sent Casey multiple text messages and calls, but she did not answer any of them. I continued to text Casey until approximately 3:09 p.m. when I was brought to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, he said in his statement.
Hammill was arraigned in Norfolk Town Court and sent to the county jail on $2,000 bail, He posted that bail at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday but was then transferred to the Massena Police Department, who had an arrest warrant for his arrest on the felony contempt count.
