Virginia Grant, age 65, died surrounded by her family on December 8, 2012 at the Maplewood Nursing Home in Canton, N.Y. She had been a resident there and in the Potsdam nursing home since October 1991, after being struck by a drunken driver on March 1, 1991. She never regained consciousness.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, at St. Marys Church in Potsdam, NY with Rev. Msgr. Robert Aucoin as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Marys Cemetery. Calling hours will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Tuesday at the Garner Funeral Home in Potsdam, NY. Contributions in her memory may be made to United Helpers Maplewood Nursing Home in Canton, NY; Helping Hands in Hannawa Falls, a charitable organization founded by Ginnys lifelong best friend, Cindy Talcott or Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley.
Ginny is survived by her husband, Leo Grant, of Potsdam, NY; 4 children, Jeffrey Grant and fiancée, Rhonda Brown of Greer, South Carolina; Leanne Grant of Boston, MA; Margo and Kris Whyte of Newport News, VA; David and Jennifer Grant of Potsdam, NY; 2 granddaughters, Darian Grant of Potsdam and Frankie Whyte of Newport News, VA and one sister, Margaret Scoville of Potsdam, NY.
Virginia was born in Cleveland, Ohio on January 2, 1947 to the late William and Mary Trimboli Vernatter. She graduated from Potsdam High School in 1965 and married Leo Grant at St. Marys Church in Potsdam on June 14, 1969. She received her nursing degree at SUNY Canton and worked at the Potsdam Nursing Home, Head Start of St. Lawrence Co, and United Cerebral Palsy. She loved her family and enjoyed following all of their athletic and school endeavors. The auto accident was one of the worst tragedies suffered by the Potsdam community. She was prematurely taken from us in 1991.
