PARISHVILLE — The town of Parishville will celebrate its bicentennial in 2014, and as part of that celebration one of the many events it’s hoping to have is a tour of the town’s historical structures.

“We’re hoping to have a tour around town,” Historical Association President and Co-Historian Joseph R. McGill said. “It would be a horse-drawn wagon giving a tour of the historical buildings in town.”

Among the historical buildings Mr. McGill said he is hoping to include on the tour are houses that were built more than 100 years ago.

“We’re trying to get the community involved,” he said. “We’re hoping that some of the people who own older homes in town could help us out by researching a little bit of the history of their home.”

Information the association is looking for includes the home’s address, what information about it leads you to believe it was built before 1914, any information about previous owners and changes made to the house, and any other ideas anyone might have for celebrating the town’s 200th birthday. Mr. McGill also said any interesting facts or stories about the homes would be appreciated.

Using his own home as an example, Mr. McGill said, “My house was built in 1884. There’s a lot of history here.”

Offering a bit of insight into the history of his home, he said, “A woman hung herself here.” When asked whether he would be participating in the tour, Mr., McGill said, “Oh, yeah, definitely.”

He said that so far the town has received responses from “a couple people,” but he’s hoping to hear from a lot more before May, when it plans to start putting the tour together.

Mr. McGill said he believes there are plenty of houses in the town that fit the description of what it is looking for.
