VIRGINIA BEACH, VA/LOWVILLE, NY ~ Catherine I. Zimmer, 88, of Virginia Beach, formerly of Lowville, died on Monday, December 3 , 2012, at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, after being stricken at home.

Born April 10, 1924 in Lowville, NY, a daughter of Howard S. and Susie L. McHale King, she was a 1942 graduate of General Martin High School in Glenfield, NY.

She married Martin E. Zimmer on May 11, 1946 in Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church, Stanley, N. Dakota, with the Rev. J. E. Smieriak officiating. The couple and their family had moved to Virginia Beach in 1962. Martin died on August 16, 1996, after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

Katie and Marty traveled extensively throughout the eastern and central United States, as Marty was a government surveyor. During the early years of their children’s lives, Katie was a stay-at-home Mom. However, later on she went to work to help pay for a college education for all three of their daughters.

She was a communicant of St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Virginia Beach, and was a member of The Legion of Mary Auxiliary of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, also in Virginia Beach. She enjoyed reading, knitting, upholstering and spending time with her children, grandchildren and friends.

Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon A. & Ray Abdun-Nur, of Arroyo Grande, CA; Katherine E. & Ronald Rivet and Susan E. & Kenneth Park, all of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, Catherine M. Rivet and fiancé, Matthew Ing, and Martin A. Park, all of Virginia Beach, Danielle R. Rivet of Pullman, WA and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Agnes Snyder, who died in 2000 and her brother, Gerald King, who died in 1970.

Catherine’s funeral will be held on Friday, December 21st, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, NY, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.

Calling hours for family and friends will be on Thursday, December 20th, from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the National Kidney Foundation.
