LAFARGEVILLE Lorraine Beard finished with 29 points as the Alexandria girls basketball team scratched out a 59-53 overtime win over host LaFargeville in a Frontier League D Division game Wednesday night.
Beard converted all six of her free throw attempts in overtime for the Purple Ghosts (2-1 overall, 2-0 league). Rebecca Hitchcock added 10 points.
Krysti Brow paced the Red Knights (1-3, 0-2) with 19 points. Lauren Labiendo supplied 13 points.
SOUTH JEFFERSON 65, IHC 31
Austin Stevens finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists to lead the Spartans to a crossover victory over the Cavaliers in Adams.
Marissa Garland added 14 points and Brooke VanCoughnett provided nine points, six assists and four steals for South Jefferson (2-0).
Anna Garrabrant led Immaculate Heart (0-2) with 10 points.
BOYS BASKETBALL
BRUSHTON-MOIRA 59, MADRID-WADDINGTON 47
Justin Lavarnway led the Panthers with an 18-point, seven-rebound effort as they handed the Yellowjackets their first loss of the season in an NAC North Division game at Brushton.
Adam Martin added 16 points and five steals, and Alex Burnett finished with 14 points and four steals for Brushton-Moira (2-1, 2-0).
Colin OBryan scored a game-high 22 points, and Terry Crump hauled in a game-high nine rebounds for Madrid-Waddington (2-1, 1-1).
HOCKEY
OFA 3, TUPPER LAKE 0
Three special teams goals in a span of four minutes, 26 seconds backed an 18-save shutout by David Prudhomme as the Blue Devils opened their season with a Division II victory over the Lumberjacks in Tupper Lake.
Brandon Mullin generated the first two goals with assists from defenseman Joe Giglio, and Drew Costin added the third score for Ogdensburg Free Academy.
Marcus Richer made 32 saves for Tupper Lake (0-2).
MALONE 3, NORWOOD-NORFOLK 1
Joey Brown stopped 42 shots in goal as the Huskies opened their season with a Division II win over the Flyers in Malone.
Bailey Conklin, Trevor Henderson and Terrance Studlack scored for Malone.
Brad Richards saved 20 shots for Norwood-Norfolk (1-1, 0-1).
WRESTLING
CARTHAGE 42, SANDY CREEK 36
Marcelino Aponte (99 pounds), Andrew McFarland (113) and William Batey (220) claimed pins in under a minute as they edged out a Frontier League interdivision win at Sandy Creek.
Trevor Gibbons (285) also won by pinfall for Carthage (1-0). Shayne Brady won by decision at 182 pounds.
Zach Pfluger won his match at 145 pounds in 37 seconds for Sandy Creek (3-3, 0-1).
CANTON 55, CLIFTON-FINE 15
The Bears received two pins to open their season with a Northern Athletic Conference win over the Eagles at Star Lake.
Justin Foster (132 pounds) and Zachary Rottier (285) provided the pins for Canton, while Ian Erlichman (145), Andrew Knight (160) and Alan Clement (182) won by decision.
Dawson Kerr (113) and Seth Robert (138) gained pins for Clifton-Fine.
OFA 46, MASSENA 40
The Red Raiders overcame a 24-point deficit but were denied by the Blue Devils in the NAC season opener for both teams in Massena.
OFA worked its way to a 30-6 lead through the first six bouts before Massena battled back to take five of the next six matches and pull even at 34 apiece.
Nate Murdock put the Blue Devils back on top when he pinned Hunter Perrine in the third round of the 152-pound match. Cody Allen David then sealed the win for OFA with a pin at 160 pounds.
GOUVERNEUR 57, MALONE 30
The Wildcats used three pins and five forfeits to beat the Huskies in the NAC season opener for both teams in Malone.
Curtis Fuller (160), Aaron Bush (113) and Joey Love (138) provided the pins for Gouverneur.
VOLLEYBALL
CARTHAGE 3, RFA 0
Heather Miller hit eight kills as the Comets gained a 25-21, 25-14, 25-13 nonleague victory at Rome.
Haley Hamm supplied eight aces and two kills, and Carly Sullivan finished with 10 assists and two kills for Carthage (3-0).
Lindsey Bartlett recorded four aces and three kills, and Sydney Perry added two kills for Rome Free Academy (0-3).
BOYS SWIMMING
BEAVER RIVER 50, GOUVERNEUR 41
Joel Kloster captured the 200- and 500-yard freestyles and anchored two first-place relays to spark the Beavers to a season-opening Frontier League B Division victory over the Wildcats at Beaver Falls.
Dakota Aldridge and Alex Deon each claimed two events and swam on the winning 200 free relay for Gouverneur. Aldridge took the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, and Deon won the 200 individual medley and 100 free.
