A note of appreciation for the Watertown Fire Department and honors for city police officers were presented at Monday nights City Council meeting.
The Professional Firefighters of Endicott sent their document of appreciation for the efforts of five Watertown firefighters in September 2011 in Broome County, where the overflowing Susquehanna River was forcing the evacuation of homes. During its 72-hour deployment, the city fire crew evacuated 45 residents and pets from Johnson City, and then in Endicott assisted in moving utility crews and equipment to a water treatment facility. The water system, having been shut down in advance of a storm, was near depletion.
Assigned to that detail were battalion Chief Timothy P. Wiley and firefighters Troy A. Chisamore, Mark W. Jones, Jeffrey S. Narrow and Randy J. Root.
The following city police honors were announced:
n Exceptional duty award to Officer Dennis C. Lawlee for initiating an investigation on Oct. 27, 2010, in which two people were arrested when 222 packages of heroin, 88 grams of marijuana and $1,899 in cash were seized at a residence.
n Life-saving medals to Officers Lawlee and Michael B. Zicari for disarming a woman who was stabbing herself in a third-floor apartment on March 25, 2011.
n Life-saving medal to Officer David W. Horr for restraining an intoxicated woman on the Court Street Bridge on April 30, 2011, preventing her from injuring herself.
n Life-saving medals to Officers Frederick E. March and Jacob W. Bull for rescuing a person who on Nov. 16, 2011, had hanged himself.
n Meritorious service award to Officer Gregory P. Gibbs for assisting three trapped people in their escape from a burning apartment building on May 15 and for securing evidence for an arson arrest in the fire.
n Exceptional service award to Officers Eric J. McLane, Charles L. Bickel III and Christopher L. Thomas for their quick actions in apprehending a man on June 16, 2011, after he had robbed the Key Bank branch at the Watertown Shopping Plaza on Washington Street.
n Exceptional service award to Officer Wayne W. McConnell for initiating an investigation on May 18 that led to the arrest of two people and the seizure of $2,078 and heroin with a street value of $23,700.
n Unit citation award to the A Platoon consisting of Lt. Richard C. Wood and Officers Gibbs, Horr, Matthew P. Roll, Joshua W. Davis, Shane M. Ryan, Dennis P. OBrien, Nathan L. McKeever and Joshua P. Moran for their efforts the night of May 15, first in the search for a missing person who ultimately was found dead by suicide and then for their investigation of a fire that resulted in an arson arrest.
