The Ogdensburg Police Department has added two new marked patrol cars to its fleet.

Chief Richard J. Polniak said Monday that the pair of black and white 2013 Ford Motor Company-issue Interceptor police sedans will be in service once they have been outfitted with radio, radar and other electronic equipment and visually identified as Ogdensburg police cruises with lights and decals.

“We expect in two weeks to have them on the road,” he said.

The new cruisers cost the department $24,600 each on state bids and it will cost up to another $7,500 to equip and customize each one.

They will be part of the department’s fleet of five marked cars, replacing a pair of 2008 Ford Crown Victoria sedans.

Mr. Polniak said the old cruisers have racked up too many miles, are breaking down and are beyond use.

“They’re always on the road, they’re 24/7,” the chief said. “Forty-thousand to 50,000 miles a year.”

Exactly how much will be spent on equipment will depend on what needs to be purchased anew and what can be removed from the Crown Victorias and retrofitted into the new cruisers.

They are smaller than their full-size predecessors.

“It’s based on the Taurus frame,” Mr. Polniak said, referring to Ford’s popular mid-sized sedan.

The new police cruisers are powered by 280-horsepower, six-cylinder, 3.5-liter engines.
