ALBANY— The Adirondack Park Agency is requesting public comments on proposed general permits for tree cutting and treating aquatic invasive species.

The APA, responsible for regulation inside the 6-million-acre park, said the comment period ends Dec. 28.

The forestry permit would establish simplified APA approval for limited clear-cutting under certain thresholds for landowners with certified forest management plans.

The agency said it’s meant to encourage sustainable forestry, including shelter-wood cuts, meant to remove taller trees and let more sunlight reach the forest floor.

For non-native aquatic species, the general permit would authorize the state, municipalities and qualified lake associations to control them through rubber mat barriers and hand harvesting.

The text of the proposal is available on the APA website at www.apa.ny.gov.
