GOUVERNEUR — Mr. and Mrs. Roger L. Rice, 1545 County Route 22, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a surprise party at the Gouverneur Elks Club on Aug. 18.

Mr. Rice, son of the late Leon and Ruth Rice, and Judy M. Johnson, daughter of the late Kermit and Vivalene Johnson, were married on Nov. 24, 1962, at St. James Church, Gouverneur, with the Rev. John B. Darcy officiating. Honor attendants were Brent Smith, Lindale, Texas, and Judy Caswell Lutz, Marietta, Ga.

Mr. Rice graduated in 1960 from Gouverneur Central School. He operated a farm on the Hull Road, Gouverneur, for several years, worked for Groton Paper Co. and was a bus driver for Gouverneur High School for several years. He retired in 2003 from the Town of Fowler Highway Department after 23 years of service. He enjoys hunting and camping.

Mrs. Rice graduated in 1962 from Gouverneur Central School. She is a homemaker and was a motor route driver for the Watertown Daily Times for 26 years. She has also worked for Gouverneur Central Schools, Johnson’s Hardware, Easton’s Hardware, was a photographer for Gouverneur Tribune Press and retired in 2006 from American Greetings Card Company. She enjoys taking photographs, crafts and camping with family and friends.

The couple has a son and daughter-in-law, Kermit and Angel, Gouverneur; a daughter, Penny Rice, Gouverneur; and two grandchildren.
