St. Lawrence University continued its success on Friday nights and as a result broke into the win column in conference play.

Justin Baker and Greg Carey each scored a power-play goal in the second period and the Saints went on to defeat Colgate, 4-2 at Starr Rink to record their first victory in ECAC Hockey play this season.

Goalie Matt Weninger made 31 saves as St. Lawrence (7-4-2 overall, 1-2-2 conference) snapped a four-game winless skid in league play.

“We played real well tonight, like we’ve done on quite a few Friday nights now,” St. Lawrence coach Greg Carvel said. “This was important for us to get this first league win.”

Baker, a junior defenseman, totaled three points, including a pair of assists, and senior captain Kyle Flanagan registered three assists for the Saints, who improved to 5-0-2 in Friday games this season.

The Saints seized a 2-0 lead in the first period with two goals within a span of one minute, 27 seconds.

First, Jeremy Wick scored on a break into the Colgate zone by snapping the puck under the crossbar at 8 minutes, 10 seconds.

St. Lawrence then capitalized on a turnover as Patrick Doherty finished off a pass from Flanagan at 9:37.

After Tyson Spink scored a power-play goal at 13:56 to pull Colgate (6-7-2, 2-4-1) within one, the Saints responded by scoring the game’s next two goals.

Flanagan set up three consecutive goals, including the power-play tallies by Baker and Carey.

St. Lawrence completes its weekend road trip at Cornell at 7 tonight.
