CANTON — St. Lawrence County has recorded its fifth rabid raccoon this year, Public Health Department officials said Monday.

The animal, which showed signs of illness and aggressive behavior, was sent to the state lab and tested positive for rabies, according to an agency release.

Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system and kills almost any animal or human, health officials noted. They stressed pet owners should keep animals’ rabies vaccinations up to date and avoid contact with stray dogs, cats or other wildlife.

To report possible exposure or for more information about rabies, call the Public Health Department at 386-2325.
