CAPE VINCENT — BP plans to use larger wind turbines to compensate for the 11 turbines it recently removed from its Cape Vincent Wind Farm plan.

In its revised public involvement program plan for community outreach to the state Public Service Commission, BP stated the “latest turbine options under consideration” would reach a blade-tip height of 499 feet, considerably higher than the 430-foot turbines it had been planning to use before taking over the St. Lawrence Wind Farm project proposed earlier this year.

Richard F. Chandler, director of business development for the now-combined $300 million project, has stated the turbines would not exceed 500 feet in a September meeting with local officials.

BP’s proposed 124-turbine wind farm is expected to generate 200 to 285 megawatts of electricity. The company is seeking a state siting process which could override local laws strictly regulating commercial turbines.
