Repairs continue on Sergi’s in Potsdam

POTSDAM — Sergi’s Italian Restaurant is still repairing the damage from the windstorm that tore the roof from its building July 17, with no opening date in site.

“There’s no date yet,” owner Sam Spagnola said. “They work hard every day, but there’s no date yet. I hope very soon.”

There is plenty of work left to do on the building at 10 Market St., which was among the hardest hit. It has remained condemned since the storm. A tarp still covers part of the roof, which was torn off during the gusts that ripped through downtown Potsdam.

Mr. Spagnola said insurance will cover at least part of the repair, although it is still unknown how much of the bill will have to be paid by Sergi’s.

As repairs continue, the family-run business has continued to operate out of 38 Market St., formerly Julian’s Restaurant. Business has been good at the temporary location, according to Mr. Spagnola, but he said he is eager to move back to 10 Market St.

While he is grateful for a place to run his business, 38 Market St. has a few problems, most notably its smaller size.

“Over here we can’t make everybody happy, because it’s small, but it’s better than nothing,” he said.

Mr. Spagnola said he hopes he will be able to return to 10 Market St. by the end of the year, but it is still too early to know what to expect.

Customers should not expect any major changes when Sergi’s reopens at its original location. The menu and prices will be the same, and the decor will be familiar to anyone who knows the restaurant.

“Everybody loves that place,” Mr. Spagnola said, “and I love that place too.”
