BUFFALO — Ben Sexton scored a goal with 28.7 seconds left in the game to help the Clarkson University men’s hockey team salvage a 3-3 tie with Canisius in a nonconference game Saturday afternoon at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.

Canisius (1-4-2 overall) had just taken a 3-2 lead with 53.7 seconds left on a power-play goal from Tyler Wiseman. Clarkson (0-4-2) pulled goalie Andrew Hunt for an extra attacker and Sexton scored 11 seconds later to tie it.

“For us to come back was a positive,” Clarkson coach Casey Jones said. “It was disappointing, because we put ourselves in a situation with a bad penalty that gave them momentum when we had control of the game.”

Jones, though, did appreciate his team’s dedication throughout the game. Even though Clarkson has not won a game yet, the Golden Knights have shown tenacity in games, including rallying from a 5-1 deficit in the season opener at Colorado College to cut the final score to 5-4.

“I have zero complaints about the team’s work ethic and ability to work hard right toward the end,” Jones said.

Clarkson got off to a slow start Saturday. The Golden Knights were outshot 10-5 in the first period and fell behind 2-0 after Wiseman scored on a power-play in the first period, and Mitch McCrank scored at 4 minutes, 39 seconds of the second period.

But the Golden Knights controlled play in the second and third periods, outshooting Canisius 24-14.

“I thought after the first period we settled in and had some good scoring chances and shots on net,” Jones said.

Patrick Marsh cut the Golden Griffins lead to 2-1 with a goal at 18:03 of the second period, and freshman Pat Megannety scored his fourth goal of the season during a power play at 13:04 to tie the game 2-2.

Hunt, another freshman, made his first appearance as a Golden Knight and stopped 26 of 29 shots.

“In the first period he had three or four great saves that gave us a chance to settle in,” Jones said. “I thought he accounted pretty well for himself tonight.”

Clarkson plays Canisius again at 3 this afternoon and then opens ECAC Hockey play next weekend with games at Yale and Brown.
