TROY — Rensselaer made its last three shots in a shootout to edge St. Lawrence University 3-2 on penalty kicks in a Liberty League men’s soccer semifinal on Thursday night.

The game ended in a 2-2 tie and RPI (9-5-5 overall) will advance to the title game, while SLU (13-2-3) waits to see if it gets invited to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

SLU’s J.J. Tipton forced the overtime when he scored an unassisted goal in the 83rd minute, ending a stretch that saw three goals scored in just over seven minutes.

RPI led 1-0 off a goal from Matt Koziol in the 29th minute. The Saints tied the game with a goal from Alex Laird in the 75th minute, then RPI answered just six minutes later with a shot from Ryan Gracy.

SLU had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the shootout, but missed three of its last four attempts.
