FORT DRUM — A fire in an apartment building on post at 8004 General Grant Drive left 11 people without a home Wednesday.

The blaze in the Richards Hills Housing area heavily damaged an apartment and damaged three other units on post, said spokeswoman Julie A. Cupernall.

The blaze was reported about 1 p.m. and took about an hour to extinguish. No one was injured. It was unclear how many people were at home at the time or who called the fire in to Fort Drum 911 dispatch.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fort Drum officials are providing temporary housing and other support services to the displaced soldiers and family members who lived in the building.

The four-unit building is owned by Fort Drum Mountain Community Homes.

The Fort Drum Fire Department was helped by mutual aid from the city of Watertown Fire Department.

Ms. Cupernall was unable to provide any more details Wednesday.
