Green Party congressional candidate Don Hassig says he's going to Occupy Fort Drum today.

A spokeswoman for Fort Drum, meanwhile, told Times staff writer Gordon Block that no such thing will happen. Julie Cupernall said that candidates aren't allowed to campaign on the military post.

Mr. Hassig had said that he would try to go door-to-door on the post to spread his environmental message. Mr. Hassig said his "occupation" of Fort Drum and other Veterans Administration outposts would be "very mild mannered."

"I believe that I have the right to do this as an American citizen," Mr. Hassig said. "Surely my freedom of speech applies to warning soldiers of an avoidable health hazard."

Mr. Hassig on the ballot against Republican Matt Doheny of Watertown and Rep. Bill Owens, D-Plattsburgh. The election is Nov. 6.
