The first wave of the Tug Hill Commission’s Black River Trash Bash took place Saturday at locations in Lewis and Jefferson counties.

In Carthage, volunteers collected and documented 24 pounds of trash from the West Carthage boat launch, while 15 pounds was gathered at the Glenfield boat launch.

The 35 volunteers in Lyons Falls, however, filled 13 bags with a total of 204 pounds of trash.

Roscoe J. “Rocky” Fawcett Jr., who headed up the Lyons Falls cleanup, said, “about 31 pounds was from a refrigerator door we found.”

The totals, along with specific item information, has been sent to the American Littoral Society for use in devising strategies to combat pollution.

Upcoming cleanups are scheduled in Watertown and Boonville.

The Watertown cleanup will be Sept. 29. Volunteers will meet at 10 a.m. at Waterworks Park, and can call Kalie Brady at 779-2239 with any questions.

The final cleanup will be Oct. 6 in Boonville. Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. at Erwin Park; call Ian M. Klingbail at 942-2610 for more information.
