CARTHAGE Two school administrative positions in the Carthage Central School District were filled to accommodate for shifts and resignations earlier this year.
The Board of Education approved Peter E. Stratton as the middle schools interim principal and Stephen J. Nolan as the athletic director and high school assistant principal at Mondays meeting at Carthage High School.
Mr. Stratton, a retired South Lewis Central elementary principal, previously has served as an interim at Clifton-Fine Central and South Lewis. His salary will be $375 per day with no other benefits. He was approved unanimously with no discussion by the board.
Mr. Stratton will serve from Thursday until June 30 to give the district more time to look for a replacement for former middle school Principal Andrea K. Miller. Mrs. Miller resigned in June to become the districts assistant superintendent.
We had an interview committee and we couldnt come to a consensus, Mr. Turner said. Its a difficult time of year to look for administrators.
Advertisements for a middle school principal will go out in the spring.
Mr. Nolan, who served as athletics and physical education director in addition to high school principal at Warrensburg Central School District, will be paid $81,000 annually in his new position while on probation. He replaces Robert Alexander, who resigned in July to become Indian River High Schools assistant principal.
He was an athletics director when his position was cut to half the time, Mr. Turner said.
In addition to the two administrative positions, the board approved 18 instructional positions, including three grant-funded STEM teachers for the high school and middle school.
During the meeting, Mr. Turner also suggested several board members meet with an SEI Design Group representative Aug. 30 to discuss the future of a voter-rejected $35.5 million capital construction project. He pointed out the district is not obliged to work with the representative again if the district decides to continue pursuing the capital project.
SEI Design served as a project consultant for the district during the 2011-12 school year.
I think its important to tell the taxpayers that SEI wont charge us until the project starts, board member Joseph A. Colangelo said.
