CANTON — St. Lawrence County should join regional consortiums on interoperable communications and hazardous material, a Board of Legislators committee recommended Monday.

The communications consortium would be with Jefferson and Lewis counties. Joining will help make the county eligible for grants to establish a communications network.

The hazardous material consortium would be with Essex, Clinton, Franklin, Warren and Washington counties. Being a member could help the county find funding for equipment and its maintenance.

“This is a regional approach,” said Joseph M. Gilbert, county emergency services director. “We’re at such a disadvantage applying for grants as a stand-alone county.”
