LAKE PLACID The Olympic Regional Development Authority will have a press conference at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Lake Placid Olympic Center when it is expected to announce that ECAC Hockey is moving its championship weekend to Lake Placid beginning in 2014.
The conference held its championship weekend at the Herb Brooks Arena from 1993-2002 before moving the event to Albanys Times Union Arena from 2003-10. The past two years it has been held at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, where it will conclude a three-year contract in March.
The move will considerably shorten the drive for area fans who wish to attend the event. Its about a 450-mile drive each way from St. Lawrence University and Canton to Atlantic City, but the drive from Canton to Lake Placid is about 83 miles. Potsdam, where Clarkson University is located, is 10 miles closer to Lake Placid.
Both area teams fared well when the championship weekend was in Lake Placid. Clarkson won conference titles in 1993 and 1999 and SLU won titles in 2000 and 2001. Since the event moved only Clarkson in 2007 has won a championship.
