BLACK RIVER — A proposed village law would stop public property from being used for auto repair, which can cause environmental contamination and damage to village property.

The law would enable police officers, the village code enforcement officer or the superintendent of public works to bring charges against any individual using village-owned parking lots to perform repairs and maintenance. Penalties for violation include fines of $50 to $250 and/or imprisonment for up 15 days. Civil liability may be incurred if damage is caused to village facilities or if environmental cleanup is needed.

The board has set a public hearing on the law for 6 p.m. Sept. 4, which will be the date of the monthly meeting due to the Labor Day holiday.
