The USS Edson, a retired U.S. Navy destroyer, passed through the St. Lawrence Seaway Thursday in Ogdensburg en route to Saginaw, Mich., where it will rest as part of the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum.

The 418-foot Edson, accompanied by two tugboats, came from the U.S. Naval Yard in Philadelphia. The destroyer, first launched in 1958, is named after Colonel Merritt A. Edson, who served in the Marine Corps Reserve during both World Wars and received the Medal of Honor.

The vessel was decommissioned in December 1988 after a career with missions to Taiwan, Cambodia and Vietnam and other assignments.

It was stationed on the West Coast throughout its career, primarily in California.
