The Indian River Lakes Conservancy’s biggest annual event, Celebration of the Lakes, is just around the corner.

Funds raised this year at the Aug. 11 event will support the Redwood-based land trust’s activities and help the organization expand its Grand Lake Reserve.

IRLC board member Dani F. Baker said the land trust soon plans to acquire a 50-acre property, which includes a man-made pond, just outside of the hamlet of Redwood that will serve as a major inlet for the nature reserve.

The property’s owner, Kenneth Boyd, a Redwood resident, has agreed to sell his land at a price significantly less than its appraised value to IRLC — which hopes eventually to build a handicapped-accessible trail with a view of the pond.

The fundraiser — featuring tours, food, dancing and a silent auction of local artwork, gifts and services — will begin at 4 p.m. with drinks and hors d’oeuvres at Coyote Moon Vineyards, 17371 County Route 3, Clayton.

Following the winery tours at 5 p.m. will be a pig roast dinner — which includes salads, corn and salt potatoes, fruit shortcake dessert and special hand-dipped chocolates from Covered-in-Chocolate, Theresa. Non-alcoholic beverages will be provided and a cash bar will be available.

Dancing will follow dinner, with music from the Caramelo Trio, a Potsdam ensemble that specializes in Latin dance styles with a touch of swing.

Tickets to the event are $40 for an individual and $75 a couple and the reservation deadline is Monday.

To make a reservation, contact the land trust via email at indianriverlakes@gmail.com.
