The eighth annual Can-Am Girls Fastpitch Shootout softball event will be held today through Sunday at locations throughout the north country.
Some 70 teams from New York, Pennsylvania and Canada will compete in the tournament that is the biggest of its kind in the Northeast, tournament coordinator Mike Lennox said.
The 10-and-under competition will be at Dexter Memorial Field, with other game sites including Clayton (12-and-under), Adams Center (14-and-under), Cape Vincent and Chaumont (16-and-under) and the 18-and-under tournament will take place in Watertown at both North Elementary School and at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds.
Local teams taking part in the tournament include the Tri-County Crush (12-and-under), Hazens Northern Stars (Watertown, 14-and-under), and 16-and-under teams Hazens Northern Fastpitch (Watertown), North Country Cougars (Canton), Northern Explosion (Gouverneur) and Great Northern Naturals (Ogdensburg); as well as the Northern Nightmare (18-and-under, La Fargeville).
There is free admission to all the games and the event is sponsored by FX Caprara Car Companies and Victory Promotion.
