FORT DRUM Post authorities are looking to put out two range fires, one of which has spewed smoke into neighboring communities.
The first fire, on a range close to Fowler, smoldered over the weekend. The fire was not connected to the posts Mountain Peak training exercise, but instead to National Guard training at the site.
With smoke pouring into non-military areas off the range, the post will deploy Black Hawk helicopters to drop water on the fire.
A second fire at a separate range, which a post spokeswoman could not immediately identify Monday afternoon, was connected to live munitions used during the annual exercise. Helicopters also will be deployed to drop water on the flames.
The spokeswoman said neither fire will negatively affect the training exercise.
